PHA Silvern Risalm The UK’s Best Ridden Show Arab
By Professor Finbar Hannigan
He is the best of his generation. While many wonderful horses make their mark on the show scene, PHA Silvern Risalm comes back year after year as a champion. Most remarkable about this talented and beautiful stallion is his incredible consistency. Judges from different disciplines and different riding styles have consistently rewarded his silky smooth, athletic paces and impeccable manners, in the UK where every ridden show horse is ridden by the judge as part of the class and gives an individual display in championships. He is simply a joy to ride! He is from a single-horse family and the pride and joy of his owner and her husband as a well-loved companion horse.
This superstar stallion has two connections to the USA. His owner, Tiffani McCarthy, is an American who moved abroad on business and missing the horses at her parents Ralph and Ruth Stewart’s Arabian stud farm in Illinois, purchased Risalm as a 3-year-old “just to trail-ride him”. His British breeders, David and Jean Peck, stud name Paslow Hall Arabians, moved to the USA and have now produced US National Champion and Scottsdale Champion Sport Horse Stallion Dervatiw Gwyddion +++// , who has been awarded the AHA Legion of Supreme Merit and Legion of Excellence in only three show seasons, competing both in Arabian and Open Dressage Shows against all breeds, is also approved for breeding by The American Warmblood Society, and is establishing himself as an excellent sire of top quality Arabian and Half Arabian Sport Horse/Dressage type foals. Ironically, he, also, was originally purchased by Jean “just to trail - ride”as she was missing the farm and horses back in the UK , but now, seemingly will establish an American version of the beautiful, athletic, kind Arabians produced at Paslow Hall, and continue the legacy of outstanding horses they bred in the UK.
In 2004, Risalm once again led the UK’s most outstanding ridden show horses of the year in achievements, and next year he will join the special legion of Arabs who represent our proud breed in affiliated dressage competition against all breeds of horse. “Risalm is a true gentleman to ride and is a horse of immense ability, fantastic attitude and reaction to what he is asked,” said his trainer and producer Darren Crowe, a successful trainer and showman of Arabs, Hunters and Riding Horses, show jumper, dressage rider, and national hunt (steeplechasing) jockey. Risalm has received special praise for his trainability and aptitude from Darren’s Olympic-standard dressage coach.
At ten years old, in his sixth year of showing, PHA Silvern Risalm counts three European titles, 11 international titles, 16 national titles and 35 regional titles for a total of 65 major wins to his name, showing trademark Crabbet versatility by winning them in ridden, halter, and dressage competition. His achievements with Darren in the show ring are unequalled in the UK. He is European Supreme Champion Ridden Arabian, three times International Supreme Champion Ridden Arab and once Reserve, four times International Stallion winner where he has scored perfect 30’s for manners, performance, and judge's ride, Supreme British National Champion Ridden Horse where he came head-to-head with 256 of the UK’s best Purebreds, Part-Bred Arabs and Anglo-Arabs to win the Supreme title as well as the Purebred and Stallion titles, Ridden Arab Stallion of the Year at Horse of the Year Show where he was high-points of the show, earning 96 out of a possible 100 points for ride, conformation, type and freedom of action, British Arabian Supreme Champion, Champion Ridden Arab at the prestigious Royal Agricultural Show, Midnight Gold Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion Ridden in 12 regional AHS championship shows, Supreme Champion Arab in halter, four times Best British Bred in halter classes, Amateur Owner to Handle in halter, and Amateur Owner to Ride. He is also a three-times British National dressage winner.
Risalm has won spectator hearts as well as classes. He represents the achievements of the single-horse owner and also of the beauty and talent available in the pure Crabbet/Old English-bred Arabian in an era where they are more often seen as outstanding crosses to other bloodlines. Known for his beauty, luxurious ride, correctness of conformation, rock-solid manners and consistently stand-out performances, this steel-grey dappled stallion was compared to a “Rolls Royce” by one equine journalist.
Carrying the blue blood of many British National Champion mares and stallions, Risalm embodies his ancestors' free movement, sweet willing nature, and classic type with an exquisite head. He is 100% Crabbet/Old English bloodlines (99.5% of that being Crabbet). His regal pedigree includes grandparents Silvern Idyll, Silver Circlet, St John, and Manto x Risslana daughter Palmyra, with three near crosses to Bright Shadow, two to Silver Vanity, four to Oran, and six to Rissalix.
Risalm performed before HM Queen Elizabeth II at All the Queen’s Horses Royal Jubilee Event and was later chosen to do a special display to music at the Crabbet Convention to an international audience and also at the Sheer Versatility event which profiled the UK’s top performance stallions. In 2005, he will perform a special display at the European Endurance Championship.
